Who doesn’t love twists?! And if you don’t, then this isnt for you… But stay! This will change your mind! I am an ambassador for the simple two strand twists, as they are the most versatile hairstyle that are suitable for maintaining a professional look (for work, interviews etc) and as a trendy look when going out with your DRIP of choice!
Twists are a very popular hairstyle among afro-textured hair. There are a few different style of twists that can be done. Ranging from mini twists, twists outs and flat twists. Twists are achieved by dividing the hair into several sections, halving those sections into two parts and then twisting the two parts around one another.
There are key positives to having and maintaining twists, these are as follows: They are very low maintenance and can be kept in for 2 – 3 weeks before they start to get really messy. You are able to condition and moisturise your hair while in twists to maintain its fresh look.
You can keep your twists moisturised by applying conditioner and grease on a weekly basis (this is also a great way to ensure that the twists hold in place and maintain definition!).
When going to bed, make sure to cover your twists with a durag to ensure that they do not get messy at night. Twists also help with natural hair growth and maintain your hairs moisture as it’s a “protective style”.
Mini twists are a shorter version of twists for those with shorter hair. This twist hairstyle tends to last longer as the twists are naturally more compact. They also allow for more versatility in styling.
For a perfected shrunken mini twist look, try doing this style whilst your hair is wet. The water would naturally cause your hair to shrink and provide a shorter look.
In order to achieve a mini twist-out look, you can then separate each separate twist leaving a more defined curly finish, which can also last for an extra week or two – if you dont wash your hair.
Flat twists are similar to canerows as they essentially require the same method but are manufactured in a different way to provide an alternative look. Instead of using three sections of hair as done with canerows, these twists only require two sections at a time. This look works well on natural and blow dried hair. These are also less time consuming to take out.
Having your hair blow dried before it is twisted will show the length of your hair and allow the ponytail hairstyle – if your hair is long enough to be put into one.
I hope this weeks blog post has helped you understand more about twists and the versatility they provide. I would recommend giving twists a 2 week trial and I promise you’ll never look back! Stay tuned for more blog posts in the upcoming weeks!
