2020 vision: A Fresh Start

Happy new year to all the readers. This year is all about breaking boundaries and trying new things. This also extends to our hairstyles. Whether you are planning to try a particular style, grow your hair or cut your hair. It’s all about getting out of our comfort zone and experimenting.

Just like NSG we’ve got Options

Waves, plaits, twists, canerows. There are lots of styles we can discover over the course of the next 12 months and I will be covering them all.

Stay tuned for upcoming blog posts this year! If you would like me to cover any specific topics let me know in the comments below and I will be happy to cover this on future blog posts.

Keep your eyes peeled for further collaborations with 9bills.co.uk over the year too!

That Shrinking Feeling

Shrinkage is defined as the decrease in length when your hair dries. For guys this can happen quite frequently, especially if you are very active. If like me, you regularly go to the gym or play sports such as football, basketball etc just know your hair will look a lot shorter after your hour gym session when you get back home. I have gone to the gym with my hair halfway down my forehead and gotten back home to see my hair has shrunk by a few inches. Let me explain why…

With Type 3 and 4 hair, exposure to water causes this form of rapid shrinkage. If you just got fresh twists and you step outside to pure rain, you’re hair will shrink as it soaks up the rainwater and slowly dries. The same thing happens when you exercise and sweat. Naturally the pores in our head/face will produce sweat and will be soaked up by our hair – especially if it is fairly long and rests on your forehead and face. You can possibly avoid less shrinkage by tying your hair up in a mini man bun when exercising or wearing a hat or using a hood or umbrella when it rains.

However, there are plus sides to this shrinking feeling. Trust me, it’s a good thing! Shrinkage is completely normal and a sign of healthy hair; it shows that your hair is properly moisturized and has good elasticity. We cant change this key characteristic feature of our curly hair and shrinkage is also the main ingredient of the uniqueness of hair. To emphasize the importance of shrinkage, I want to remind the mandem that without shrinkage, our hair would not have its texture and definition.

Remember; as mentioned in my last post, our hair types can vary and my hair type may not necessarily be yours. Meaning that shrinkage may affect you differently to me as I have Type 4c hair which is more prone to the effects of shrinkage. Now that you have identified your hair type (I hope you have bro) you will understand how your hair reacts to the exposure of excess water when exercising or being caught out in rain etc. Just know that shrinkage is a sign of good hair health and that’s the most important thing. So now how you feeling?? Watch the video below for my reaction!
